Project description

Overall objective:

To improve public health services in the project area (Osijek-Baranja and Požega-Slavonia counties, West Bačka and South Bačka districts) by enabling rapid detection of MBDs through improvement of cross-border mosquito surveillance and control.

Specific objectives: 

(1) Improvement of the cross-border cooperation and coordination in prevention, surveillance and control activities and establishing an early warning system for MBD presence in the added areas (Požega-Slavonia County and South Bačka District) 

(2) Abatement treatment by source reduction and adult mosquito control measures in an environmentally responsible way  

(3) Education of the public on mosquito abatement and control measures and threats of potential mosquito-borne diseases 

Expected results: 

1. Mosquito hotbeds mapped

2. Improved manual for the control of malaria, chikungunya, dengue fever, West Nile fever and invasive mosquito species

3. Improved common protocol for emergencies and epidemic preparedness

4. Recommendations for local self-government units in South-Bačka County and Požega-Slavonia County made

5. Introduction of sampling services to detect the presence of invasive mosquito species in the project area

6. Billboards for mosquito control set up

7. Ecological traps for mosquito control used

8. Medical workers in local self-governments educated 

9. Integrated cross-border system (IT tools) for monitoring mosquitoes and diseases they transmit, mobile application

10. Public awareness raised 

Main activities:

(1) To control the presence of mosquitoes in the cross-border area

(2) To map mosquito hotbeds in South Bačka District and Požega-Slavonia County

(3) To improve the existing early warning system of the presence of infected mosquitoes in the cross-border area

(4) To suppress mosquitos in the cross-border area

(5) To determine the presence of infected mosquitoes in the cross-border area

(6) To educate the public

Target groups: 

local public authority, schools, general public (elderly citizens), medical workers
